Our clients wanted all year interest and a coherent, interesting design which wouldn’t necessarily include a lawn. She was going to get a lovely new Hartley Botanic greenhouse, so the first decision was where to put it. We decided that it should be a focal point at the bottom of the garden, in full sun. Our client was very keen to grow fruit vegetables and herbs alongside flowers for cutting.
To maximise the areas for growing plants, we decided not to have a lawn and the slope has been gradually graded to make it easy to walk around the garden. We even managed to incorporate a water feature. Steps lead down from the patio near the house into the main garden. This garden is clearly enjoyed and the owner, a true plants-woman has taken ownership of the garden by growing her own choice of plants, some of which she grows from seed in her lovely new greenhouse!
