Fence FAQs

Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about our garden fence installation service in Oxfordshire. This can be part of a larger garden design project or a standalone task. In the mean time, here are some questions that we are often asked about garden fences.

What size fence can you put up without planning permission?

Any fence that’s under 1m tall won’t require planning permission in any circumstance. If a fence is adjacent to a highway used by vehicles you will need planning permission if it’s over 1m tall. For fences over 2m tall you will definitely require planning permission.

Do you need a neighbour’s permission to put up a fence?

You only need your neighbour’s permission to put up a fence in your garden if it’s over 2m tall. This will be part of the planning permission process that you’re required to go through when erecting a fence of this height.

Who owns the fence between two houses?

The ownership of a fence between two houses will be stated on the Title Plan or Land Registry of the properties. Ownership will mean you’re responsible for repairs or maintenance of the fence.

Do you legally have to have a fence between neighbours?

A fence or wall is not a legal requirement between two properties. There are instances where a fence is required for safety such as next to a railway or road but generally there is no legal obligation to mark a boundary of a property.
