Garden Maintenance – Hook Norton, Oxfordshire
Many of our clients are busy with their working lives, and although they enjoy having a garden in which to relax and entertain, have very little time to do garden maintenance. And unfortunately, so far, we’ve not found a garden that requires absolutely no maintenance at all!
The owner of this garden found that it had become too much of a chore to maintain it. She enjoys entertaining and required more seating areas from which to see the garden and the wonderful views it enjoys.
We set to work with a complete makeover of the garden and completely transformed the space, creating an extra outdoor ‘room’ for entertaining and relaxing.
There were various precious ornaments to be incorporated in the design. With the garden as it was, they were hidden from view among all the plants. Although very pretty, cottage gardens are not low maintenance.
The key to a good design is to keep it simple. To keep a garden design low in maintenance, stick to plants that do not require too much attention. Don’t have lot’s of containers that require watering in summer and use mulch to keep down the weeds.
Other things to avoid in a low maintenance garden include, ponds or water features. It takes time to clean out ponds and filters.
Annual bedding plants are also time consuming. Instead plant hardy perennial plants that emerge every year and only require cutting back in the autumn.
Climbing plants, such as Wisterias, although lovely, do require a fair bit of maintenance to keep them looking their best so are best avoided if time is short.
Vegetable gardens are very labour intensive and best avoided, especially if you are away from home for long periods.
It is possible to have a lovely garden that requires little attention, or employ the services of a gardener. If you live in Oxfordshire or the surrounding counties, give us a call to see how we can help to keep your garden looking lovely this summer!
Our vision for the garden
Although we do maintain this garden for the client, it only requires a few hours every fortnight to keep it looking this good! The topiary requires trimming just once a year and we’ve kept the lawn to a minimum so it never becomes a chore.
Instead of being a slave to her garden, our busy client can come home to relax in this delightful space. The garden is a place of tranquility and peace.
We love looking after gardens like this one!
